Industry News: 2010 Big Year for Stimulus Money and Infrastructure

Most of the money from the U.S. government’s 2009 stimulus plan is still in Washington, but it is expected to benefit thousands of infrastructure projects in 2010. Contractors should see $76 billion in stimulus funding this year, according to Mike Pickett, CEO of Onvia. Industry News: Daytona Track Patched with Reinforced Concrete
02/23/10
Reinforced concrete will be used to patch the pothole that caused a two-hour delay of the Daytona 500 race on February 14. The concrete patch will take about two days to pour, in addition to several days of cure time. Officials expect the track to be ready for Daytona 200 Week, a motorcycle event that begins February 25. While indicators may suggest a turn-around for the economy in general, conditions for the construction industry are likely to be weak for another year or more, according a recent forecast from the Portland Cement Association (PCA). The group expects only a modest increase in cement consumption in 2010 with significant growth in 2011 and beyond. Industry News: North America’s Largest Concrete Arch

Two 1,600-foot concrete arches are the focal point of the Colorado River Bridge. The bridge, scheduled to open to traffic in June 2010, is 900 feet above the Colorado River with majestic views of Hoover Dam. The project required 7.7 million pounds of rebar, nearly 7 million pounds of structural steel, and 2.3 million pounds of post-tensioning steel. Visit http://www.hooverdambypass.org/

Industry News: Haitian Earthquake - A tragic reminder of the importance of our industry

On January 12, 2010, an earthquake occurred near the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, causing mass devastation. The damage cannot, yet, be quantified in lives and dollars, but all accounts report that it is massive. The biggest tragedy is that some part of it could have been avoided with proper engineering of buildings and reinforced construction. This article from NPR, includes commentary from a Haitian earthquake engineer, regarding the effect of the earthquake on a poor country with no national building codes.
Industry News: Concrete the Bends?

When concrete fails, its brittle nature is usually to blame. For example, when concrete stretches beyond its original size, cracks form, and it no longer carries a load. A team of scientists at the University of Michigan has created a concrete material that stretches, bends, and even heals its own cracks. The Emirate of Dubai, like most of the world, had its share of financial woes in 2009. To kick off 2010, the crowning jewel of an incredible building boom in the city of Dubai, the Burj Dubai, renamed to Burj Khalifa, officially opened today. Along with being the tallest building in the world, the reinforced concrete Burj Khalifa breaks several other records, seen on the BBC News website.

For example, rebar is made from recycled steel and can also be recycled ; concrete buildings can often be reinforced and re-used; and concrete itself can be crushed and re-used as fill. The building, designed and constructed by N M Roof Designers (NMRD) of Jaipur, features a reinforced concrete flat roof with a single span of 119 feet. Industry News: Sifting through the grains - rice husks may finally be ready for the the big show!

For years, we have known that rice husks are full of silicon dioxide (SiO2), an essential ingredient in concrete. The problem has been how to create silicon-rich ash from it, without the high carbon content that naturally results from burning. Scientists from Plano, Texas have tentatively found a way to do just that, and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide byproduct. Read the complete Discovery News story, here.

Industry News: Couple Builds Fire-Resistant All-Concrete Home

In 2007, wildfires burned down Tom and Pam Moore’s home in North Poway, California, despite the fact that it had concrete siding and other fire-resistant features. The couple is currently building a new home they say will be truly fire-proof. The home is being built using insulated concrete form (ICF) construction. Industry News: Texas Considers Controversial Dike Project

Engineers are considering ways to limit the devastation of flooding in the Houston/Galveston area of Texas. Last year, the area was devastated by Hurricane Ike, causing $29 billion in damage, more than seven times the projected cost of a massive concrete dike being considered. Industry News: MIT Identifies Cause of Concrete Creep

Engineers at MIT say the rearrangement of particles at the nano-scale is the cause of “concrete creep” – the tendency for concrete to gradually deform over time. According to the authors of the MIT study, the findings will help engineers to nano-engineer the structure of concrete to improve strength and durability. Industry Feature: Professor “Quake Tests” Concrete Parking Garage

Civil Engineering Professor Robert Fleischman recently built a half-scale concrete parking garage, then shook it to pieces. The $2.5 million earthquake study involved a 450-ton structure built on a giant shake table. The “test garage” took years to plan, months to build, and only five minutes to destroy. More than 600 instruments were located throughout the structure to monitor and record data, which will studied and incorporated into future building codes. In 2008, you can expense 100% of your first $250,000 of qualifying purchases for depreciation (Section 179 deduction). If your purchases exceed $250,000, you can apply an additional 50% bonus write-off, plus your normal first-year depreciation, to the balance. The deductions apply to qualifying assets placed in service by January 1, 2009. The incentive is aimed at small businesses making less than $800,000 of deductible purchases in one year. The new I-64/Battlefield Boulevard interchange in Virginia is being rebuilt … using material from the old one. Rather than hauling the old smashed-up concrete away, it is being pulverized on-site into golf ball-size pieces that will eventually be combined with cement to form the basis for the new road. Several pieces of specialized concrete recycling equipment are at work on the job, including a machine that uses magnets to separate the rebar from the concrete. Industry Feature: Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Newest” Concrete Home

In 1950, Frank Lloyd Wright designed a home to be built on an 11-acre island on Lake Mahopac, NY. The island’s then-owners couldn’t afford to build the house. But Barbara and Joe Massaro, who purchased the island property in 1991, decided the build the home using Wright’s plans. The home, which features concrete floors, walls, roof, and countertops, was completed June 8, 2007 — the architect’s birthday. Read the full story at Concrete Construction Online.
Tech News: PC Manufacturers Offer Recycling Programs

Computer manufacturers Dell, HP, and IBM all offer programs that allow consumers to recycle desktop PCs, notebooks, printers, and monitors. The programs vary, but all are intended to reduce the 2 million+ tons of electronic goods that end up in landfills in the US each year. The plastic, glass, and metals are transformed into a variety of new products. In fact, a c-net article on HP’s recycling program says, “… the company extracts a small amount of steel that is eventually fashioned into building materials such as beams or rebar by HP's recycling partners.”

Like nearly all of the big properties on Las Vegas’ famous Strip, the new MGM Mirage City-Center is made primarily of reinforced concrete. In fact, it will require more than 1 million yards of reinforced concrete to complete the project. The 76-acre complex is designed to make visitors feel like they are shopping and dining in a big city atmosphere, surrounded by tall buildings. The City-Center is the largest privately funded construction project in the U.S. It’s also the largest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) project in the country. Construction is underway for the United States’ tallest concrete reinforced building. The new Trump International Hotel and Tower will rise 1,134 feet above ground. According to members of the Trump Organization, Donald Trump favors the use of structurally reinforced concrete for his projects because it reduces “sway” in tall buildings and saves owners money. Industry News: College Offers Bachelor’s Degree in Concrete Management

Middle Tennessee State University began offering a concrete management degree program in 1996. The industry-funded program is now the fastest-growing major on campus. Although Middle Tennessee was the first, other universities including California State - Chico, Arizona State, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, are now also offering similar programs. A recent survey of the top 100 concrete contractors in the U.S. by Concrete Construction Magazine found that concrete construction is booming. Best Software, Inc. is Changing Its Name Back to Sage

When worldwide business software leader Sage Group plc entered the U.S. market, the company branded itself with the parent company’s name “Sage.” However, at the time, a Texas company had the rights to the “Sage” name, forcing Sage’s U.S. division to use “Best Software, Inc.” instead. In March, the company announced it had acquired the rights to “Sage” and would again be using the “Sage” brand worldwide.
